Two Men Drown in Heroic Attempt to Save Woman from Suicide in Bhima River
KALABURAGI: A rescue attempt turned tragic on Tuesday evening when two men drowned in the Bhima River while trying to save a woman who had jumped from a bridge in an apparent suicide attempt. The incident occurred near the Afzalpur-Devanagaon Bridge in Devangaon, Aland Taluk of Kalaburagi district.
Local police have identified the deceased as Shivu and Raju. The woman, Lakshmi, who is Shivu’s wife, survived the incident thanks to the intervention of local fishermen.
According to eyewitnesses, Lakshmi jumped from the Afzalpur-Devanagaon Bridge following what authorities believe was a family dispute. In a desperate attempt to save her, Shivu and his relative, Raju, immediately plunged into the river.
“It was a heroic but ultimately tragic act,” said Inspector Ramesh Kumar of the Afzalpur Police Station. “While local fishermen managed to rescue Lakshmi, unfortunately, both Shivu and Raju were swept away by the strong currents.”
The drowning incident was captured on mobile phone cameras by stunned onlookers, providing grim documentation of the tragedy as it unfolded.
Upon receiving the information, fire department personnel and Afzalpur police rushed to the scene. After a prolonged search operation, the bodies of Shivu and Raju were recovered near the Devangaon Bridge in Sindagi Taluk of the neighboring Vijayapura district.
“We have registered a case and are conducting a thorough investigation into the circumstances that led to this unfortunate incident,” Kumar added.
